Biography
Crooner with the Harry James and Tommy Dorsey orchestras who emerged as the pop
idol of millions of bobbysoxers in the early 1940s. Slightly built and possessed
of undeniably magnetic charm, Sinatra made his first acting appearance in 1943
at RKO and soon moved to MGM, where he generally played boyish innocents unaware
of their allure for women. His best features amidst this light, breezy fare were
two musicals casting him and Gene Kelly as sailor pals, "Anchors Aweigh" (1945)
and "On the Town" (1949). His popularity continued until the end of the decade
until several poor films and hemorrhaged vocal chords brought the first phase of
his career to an end in 1952.
